She fought the slithering dark as it insinuated itself around her, fought the bands of steel beneath the velvet glove as the vice closed in across her chest, but the dark won out. It held her, like a fly in a spider's web, while the hideous little creatures within it chattered their insane babblings into her ears.

She tried to open her eyes; tried desperately to wake up from the cocoon of madness swirling through the insidious dark around her. The frantic efforts only tightened the heavy, cloying vice on her senses.

"Must----wake---up!" her mind gasped, pushing against the glutinous cotton, fighting against the ponderous dark until her leaden eye lids were forced open just a slit..

She continued to fight the ominous dark, continued to try to force the slit of light to widen; but again the battle was too one sided: her eyes slid closed immediately, barely allowing a milliesecond of sight before the gelatinous dark engulfed her one more time.

When her eyes closed, the dark brought the things around her back to life; horrible things slithering through her mind as they skittered across her body. Her skin crawled from the contact and she tried to jerk away from them, to shake her body enough to dislodge them or at least retard their steady movement toward her face.

"Must---wake---up!" her mind sobbed, heaving with all of the power within her against the terrible, paralyzing force.

This time her eye lids slid open and held. This time she forced herself beyond the film blurring her sight, forced her eyes to focus on the thing dangling in front of her. This time she saw the flies and the roaches and the worms crawling over it, saw the rope holding it to the rafter above. This time she made herself see the corpse.

And she saw it was her own.
