Designing Gifts

by Ry

Introduction

Once people have actual experience points, they may want to design their own gifts. All self-designed gifts must be approved by the Hollyhock God.

Mechanics

Starting cost: level of the miracle required (e.g., gifts necessitating a lesser change of some kind start at 6. Gifts requiring ghost miracles start at 1.)

Note: gifts requiring two separate miracles - such as a ghost miracle and a preservation - must be calculated as two separate gifts, and then added together.

Note: if the miracle is Domain Miracle-based, then some kind of Domain, not necessarily yours, goes with the miracle, of course. "Immutable" is a Lesser Preservation of Self. "Devoted Populace" is a Major Creation of love. Etc. Obviously, this does not apply to Aspect Miracle-based gifts. You cannot buy a Realm Miracle-based gift, although it is possible to create a gift which works or applies only in your realm.

Activation costs:
Invoked automatically when appropriate: +1
Free invocation: -1
1 MP invocation: -2
2 MP invocation: -3
Area of effect:
Can affect things that are almost anywhere: +1
Only local things: -1
One nearby person: -2
Self only: -3
Flexibility:
Can be used for all imaginable combinations of the Domain and Miracle level: +1
Comprehensive gift covering a variety of situations: -1
Limited selection of uses: -2
One-trick: -3

Note - a lot of people get tripped up here. One trick means ONE trick. "Turning sausages into other, nonlethal, still sausage-shaped materials" would count as limited. "Turn real sausages into cloth sausages" would be one trick.

Rarity:
Uncommon gift: +1

Note - you can pretty much assume that any gift except for "Durant" and "Immutable" will be considered uncommon.

Penetration:
Each point of penetration: +1

Note - there is no maximum level of penetration you can purchase, but you cannot increase a gift's penetration by spending additional miracle points after purchase.

Final Note - All gifts cost at least one point. If your gifts would normally cost -9, you still have to pay one point for it. (Admittedly, the only -9 point gift I can think of would be one which allowed you to, for a cost of 2 MP, determine whether or not someone was actively and directly trying to kill you at that very moment.)
